So, the other night I am out with some friends. I got a call from my friend Darla, who lives in Texas, but was on a work assignment in Mississippi. She writes for a national magazine and was on a story. It was night, she was about to either head home or grab a hotel when the unthinkable happened to her...a woman, all alone in her car, at night....she ran 0ut of gas.
Now, let me say, yes, Darla is an educated woman, not only with "book smarts" as we say in the South, but I thought she was a woman with common sense.....hmmm.
Out of town and out of gas.....Darla, Darla, Darla...
So I am on the phone with her...I'm in Memphis, she is somewhere in the middle of Mississippi, and that is hours away I might add. That's when she announces that she is about to hike up an exit ramp to get gas. At this point, every made-for-tv-movie pops into my head and I think of all the things that could go awry. My next question of course is, what exit ramp are you on....as I am afraid I could be the last person to talk to her if she was to never be heard from again!!!! Well, all is well that ends well, I get a return call that she did indeed get gas and was headed to a hotel.....with a lesson learned about the ol' gas gauge. When it says
E get gas.....if not sooner!!! In fact, she even wrote about it. She also writes a column for the
Dallas Morning News, and she wrote about this very event. She even mentioned me by name!! That is why she is my friend!! Here is a link to that story....enjoy!!
