Almost 2009....
Will I make resolutions? I sure could use a few....being healthier, being more patient and trying to be more organized are always a few things I could work on. I am certainly not alone. It's always fun to drive by the spa/gym in the first part of January and notice the full parking lots as EVERYONE has that
New Year/New You mindset.
So here's to saying good-bye to 2008, for me it was a pretty crazy year.
And here's to looking at a prosperous and thinner :) 2009.
Happy New Year to you!!

What did I learn Monday....
So, Monday night I learned a little something about myself. Let me preface this by saying, I like sports. While I am not really the most athletic person around, I do like to watch them on TV and I love watching my kids do whatever sporting activities they enjoy. That being said, I have enjoyed soccer seasons, cheered my way through t-ball and baseball, even gotten the hang of the rules in inline hockey. However, this season is the first for me as a basketball mom...and let me say, this is a tough one for me. The sport is fine, I even played some in grade school. But as a Mom, it's not for me. I guess there is a reason I am a baseball person...some say it is too slow paced. Not me...I love the often times passive way you can watch a baseball game (and sure it's a bit more stressful to watch when your kid plays infield) but basketball...that's a whole other deal.
How can I describe it.....as a Mom who is a spectator, when your kid is on the court, the fun, fast paced nature of the game becomes much more nerve racking and tense. And my son is only 8!!!!
What must it be like to be related to or invested in someone who plays college or pro ball of any kind. Think about the mom's of all the U of M Tigers basketball players in the NCAA championship game? Or the mom of any field goal kicker in any football league....and again, I know, I know..... my son is only 8. And we all know in our hearts, the point is not if he wins, or makes that basket, or hits his free throw shot. It's all about him having fun. And that's all he will hear from me.
But inside, I'll be all in knots, hoping he can break out of the pack, find a guy to pass to, or just simply just not walk or double dribble. :)

Karen Perrin Memphis radio, FM 100 to Classic Hits 94.1 KQK
As I write this, it is election day. I did not early vote. I went at lunch today. I heard all kinds of horror stories about how long the lines might be.
I waited 8 minutes.
No, that is not a typo....eight.....8......one more than 7 but less than 9....yes, 8 minutes!! True, if my name started with an A-D, my wait would have been longer...but not for me Karen Perrin.....it was good to have a last name with "P" today. Who did I vote for....none of your d*%# business, but I voted. :)
So, back to work talk...... Steve Conley and I have been reunited for some time now on my new station, Classic Hits 94.1. (I'd love to hear from you and know what you think. you can email me at karen@941kqk.com and you can listen on line at www.941kqk.com .....full website to launch soon!!! ) People seem to love the music...no matter if they are in their 20's all the way up to 60's and beyond. It's fun, upbeat music that reminds me of what we played on those Whatever Weekends we did at FM 100 for years.
Anyway, I enjoy working with Steve, but I sure miss Ron and Brett too. I know they are doing fine, I just don't see them for 5-6 hours a day like I did for years. Now I just look at Steve's mug across the table. :) He looks just the same as he did two years ago before he "left" FM 100.
Go vote if you haven't yet and you read this on election day.

A new radio adventure for Karen!!!!!
This is a day that is filled with many emotions. The company we work for, Entercom, owns many radio stations in the Memphis area. They decided one of those stations (94.1) needed some changing and they starting making plans. Those plans included me. The more we talked, the more I realized it was quite an opportunity to consider. Of course, after 14 1/2 years with Ron, I hoped he would be in that plan, but they said (and we all know!) Ron needs to stay at FM 100. However, at the same time, the company also knows of my loyalty to this station. Corporate knew certain things would need to be in place for me to even contemplate leaving the FM 100 home I have known for so long. One way for me to consider it, put Steve Conley in the mix. Yes, the Steve who two years ago left the morning show.
So, after careful consideration and many, many phone calls.......the plan in place is to let Ron hold down the fort here at FM 100, and I will join with Steve Conley once again, but this time, we will head left of the dial, to 94.1. While it will be different stations you hear us on, we are still one big radio family behind the scenes.
I look forward to the challenge and the excitement of a new radio station, at the same time, I leave FM 100 with some of the best memories of my life. I will always cherish my time here....even when Ron was busy making up lies about me when I was on vacation or when the last thing I wanted to do was to get up at 3:45!! I enjoyed everyday (okay, with the exception of one or two) at FM 100. At first I was worried Ron would be lonely. We are the best of friends and I am the one of many of his in-air partners who managed to stick around the longest. But Ron will have you and Brett and Marla to keep him company. While I hope you continue your allegiance to FM 100, I certainly invite you to give the new 94.1 a try....Steve and I will be there ready to welcome you to our new radio home.

Things on my mind....
I wish I was going somewhere on Fall break. No travel plans.
If I could choose to have a personal chef or chauffeur, I would select personal chef!
The election is almost here.....who to vote for?....still time to decide, but just make sure you vote.
My kids vote to go to Zoo Boo at the Memphis Zoo every year....it starts the weekend of October 17th...it's fun for the whole family.
Why can't people take those few extra steps and put their shopping carts in the basket return.....instead they lazily push them to the side where they block parking spaces or worse, roll into cars.
A big fat, tall cup of some really good coffee would be great right now.
I am glad I don't have bronchitis like Brett.
I need to put some new songs on my ipod.
Ron doesn't know what an ipod is.
Ron can't drive a 5 speed car.
Are you playing Pick Your Purse?? You should be!!!
I just got a tall cup of coffee! Linda, a longtime listener, just brought it by for Ron, Brett and me. THANK YOU!!!!!
It smells like Fall...where are the orange and yellow leaves? Everything is still green......
Kermit the Frog once said, it's not easy being green.
Don't forget to recycle.
Have a great day,
K

Check that gas gauge...
Now, let me say, yes, Darla is an educated woman, not only with "book smarts" as we say in the South, but I thought she was a woman with common sense.....hmmm.
Out of town and out of gas.....Darla, Darla, Darla...
So I am on the phone with her...I'm in Memphis, she is somewhere in the middle of Mississippi, and that is hours away I might add. That's when she announces that she is about to hike up an exit ramp to get gas. At this point, every made-for-tv-movie pops into my head and I think of all the things that could go awry. My next question of course is, what exit ramp are you on....as I am afraid I could be the last person to talk to her if she was to never be heard from again!!!! Well, all is well that ends well, I get a return call that she did indeed get gas and was headed to a hotel.....with a lesson learned about the ol' gas gauge. When it says E get gas.....if not sooner!!! In fact, she even wrote about it. She also writes a column for the Dallas Morning News, and she wrote about this very event. She even mentioned me by name!! That is why she is my friend!! Here is a link to that story....enjoy!!

Back from vacation!
Some rain, some sun, nice temps. Red flags on the beach most days (dangerous surf) but still, fun was had by all. Even with the move closer to Panama City, I found myself driving back to the places I know back in Destin......the outlet mall, Baytowne Wharf, and that cool shoe store. But of course, what vacation with kids would be complete without......yes, the most dreaded part of any trip.......a water park!! UGH!!! I am not a fan of water parks, but alas, I know my kids (and husband!) love them. So, I said, let's knock out the Big Kahuna visit early on so I can relax the rest of the trip. Mission accomplished. Checked that one off the list Monday!!
I do find it interesting that folks say they make the move to 30-A from Destin proper because it's not as crowded. Hmm, have they been to some of those 30-A communities lately??? Sure they are quaint, but there are a couple that couldn't be anymore crowded! And let me just say, maybe it's just me, but the last thing I want to do on vacation is be forced to ride a bike wherever I go. Let's see, let's stay so far away from the beach that we must bike to get anywhere. I do not feel the need for a bike with a basket to make my vacation complete. Too much work if you ask me! :)
So anyway, the vacation was a success. I am a bit tanner and a few pounds heavier, thanks to all that eating out vacation style!! (I don't cook while I am on vacation, it's vacation for goodness sake! But yes, ask my husband and this is a whole other topic we could discuss on air!)
Not sure where Ron said I was, but it was just the beach...I am back. I would post some photos, but I am the last person in the world who still uses a camera with film. Give me some time, I'll buy a new camera soon. And now that vacation is over, that means in the Perrin world, summer is just about done. School registration next week, then school starts the week after that. WOW!! Time flies.

Weekend Magazine
yeah, crazy name I know....but it does feature fun, informative guests. Some guests are nationally known authors and speakers, others have local connections and we talk about all things Memphis.
This week, my guests are from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis. You can find out more on their website, www.bgcm.org
I pulled this straight off their website so you could read about what they do here in our area. "Since 1962, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis has offered leadership and support to thousands of youth ages 7 - 17. Through one-to-one interaction with trained adult staff, Club members learn to make positive decisions about their lives. They do better in school, stay away from drugs and gangs and begin to set personal goals for themselves, which ultimately helps them be responsible citizens of our community."
So, in case you are up early to listen, the show airs on FM 100 (99.7) at 6:00am. In the coming weeks, topics will include nutrition, LeBonheur Children's Medical Center, Education, the Pink Palace, as well as some authors from fun books. If you have any suggestions or show ideas for Weekend Magazine, feel free to email me at kperrin@fm100memphis.com
Have a great weekend,

Football or not....
Here's the deal.....we play baseball and soccer, both which I enjoy and he does as well. Now, he wants to step up and head over to the football field. I, as a mom, am torn. Never having played football myself (but being a college football fan,) I am in no hurry to make the move to tackle football. Normal mom emotions I am sure, but still the nagging questions remain...do I let him play or not? Can I wait until he's 9? Will this memory of not getting to play (if he doesn't) "mar" him the rest of this life? Will he get hurt? Can I stand the time commitment and the heat since they begin practice in August?
I know I will miss fall soccer and fall baseball if he plays since time commitments will not allow us to play them all. And, yes, it is my oldest son at issue here. I know when son #2 wants to play, my concerns will have probably subsided as I will be more familiar with the whole football plan.
Ah, the joys of being a parent. I'll let you know what my husband and I decide. If you have any thoughts on the matter, feel free to email me at kperrin@fm100memphis.com

for the kids
Congratulations to the Make a Wish foundation and PGA golfer Shaun Micheel as another successful golf tournament was held yesterday. He is so great to host an event to raise money for the kids. The pairings party was held Sunday at the Rendezvous, then the golf action and luncheon happened yesterday at Southwind. Ron hosted and did all the golf stuff, I got got to spend time with the MAW kids and their families. While the guys were out in the heat, the kids and I ate burgers, played bingo and enjoyed a magic show from Mr. Nick. We had a great day. Thanks to all who participated and made the event a success.

Where is Karen?
Q) Did you really have a surgery?
A) Yes, I had an ovarian cyst that was about the size of an orange. Since it was so large it had to be removed surgically (along with one ovary) thus the weeks of recovery time.
Q) Wow, you mean Ron was really telling the truth?
A) Yes, I know, it's an amazing thing. However, I have noticed he can not bring himself to say the word OVARY. Thus the confusion as to exactly what kind of surgery I had. I guess if it is a body part he doesn't have, he can't bring himself to utter the word on the radio.
Q) So, is everything okay?
A) Seems to be. It wasn't cancer and they only had to take the one ovary so that was all good to me!
Q) How are you feeling?
A) Better, thank you. I am still exhausted and fatigued. It is unbelievable how draining an abdominal (and I suppose any kind of major) surgery can be.
Q) Will you post a picture of your cyst on your blog?
A) I had entertained the thought, but I decided against it. I never saw my cyst nor did I have the need to bond with it once it was taken out of my body. :)
Q) Where is your cyst now?
A) Yes, someone really did ask that question (Steve!) but I do not know. It's wherever cysts go.
Q) Do you miss Ron?
A) Sure, in an odd way I suppose. I don't, however, miss getting up at 3:50am to see him everyday! But when I am waking up at 7:00am :) I do at least think of him (and Brett) and hope they are doing well.
Q) Do you miss your cyst?
A) No.
Q) What do you miss?
A) Leaving my home...going anywhere. After a surgery there is much bed rest required, so I am moving pretty slow. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak. I also miss eating out, but I would like to take this time to thank all my friends, family and neighbors who were kind enough to bring food and to Ron for sending a huge arrangement of fruit.
Q) Who else would you like to thank?
A) All the nurses and staff at Germantown Methodist....they were WONDERFUL! We have many FM 100 listeners that work there!!
Q) When will you be back at work?
A) Probably next week sometime.....not sure if it will be Monday (sorry Ron!) but at some point next week. I will assess my situation closer to week's end.
Thanks to all for your concern, emails and prayers.
Talk to you soon !!
Karen

We still love our Tigers!!
Well, the championship game has come and gone, and sadly the Memphis Tigers lost to Kansas in the final game. Memphis had a spectacular season, they won 38 games.....in Memphis we just wanted 1 more....but alas, in the end it was Kansas who pulled out the win and the championship. In fact today's Commercial Appeal reads FROM DREAM TO NIGHTMARE and HEARTBREAK. Here are some photos from our teams time in San Antonio in the Final Four from the Commercial Appeal.

What up?
As you may know, I was in Point Clear, Alabama over the weekend for a college roommate's wedding. Ford had a lovely outdoor wedding and it only started raining 3 minutes into the ceremony!! I know, what are the odds, but I hear that rain on your wedding day is good luck. She is honeymooning now. I hope to soon have some pictures from the wedding from one of my other Bama roommates Katherine (hi if you are reading this!) She is quite the photographer. I didn't remember she always had a camera in college until she brought quite a few photos to the wedding and said she had tons more at home. I hope to share some of those wedding photos soon.
Speaking of weddings and the tigers together, many will have an interesting dilemma this Saturday 4/5, months ago wedding dates were set and now ceremony time happens to be the same time as the tip off!! The solution seems to be, big flat screen TVs at the reception. In fact, I once went to a wedding in Alabama on a big football game day, and the entire group attending the reception was in front of the TV! Inconvenient on the time or not, we all know the wedding and the game must go on. Hopefully this Saturday, marriages for many will begin with a huge Tiger win!!!!
Have a great day,
K

Tiger Talk!!
GO TIGERS!!!
I have watched more basketball this year during March than ever before. Here at FM 100 (and at home) we picked teams in each bracket so that gives us reason to cheer on teams we might not have even watched before. Plus, my kids are really into it this year. They are 5 and 7 years old and LOVE basketball....especially the Memphis Tigers. I must admit I have always enjoyed Tiger basketball myself. I am from Memphis, I was born and raised here, but I did not go to the U of M. So while I cheer for my Alma mater, the University of Alabama, I have an equal allegiance to the U of M.... Memphis State as it was once called.
So, with all this basketball I have been watching, I feel like quite the armchair quarterback (of basketball anyway)......I know which players I like, which ones I think should go back on the bench and which ones I'll be sad to see go after this season. While I enjoy watching Coach Cal on the sidelines and all the guys play, I must admit a favorite for me has emerged... CDR.....Chris Douglas-Roberts.....why?
Of course, his basketball ability is one reason, and my 7 year old, Zachary, got a Memphis jersey with the #14 and yes, that is the number of CDR. He likes CDR too! I'd like to say congrats to the junior guard as he has been named one of four finalists for the 2008 Naismith Men's College Player of the Year Award. Go CDR and Go Tigers!! Beat Michigan State on Friday!!
My son just bought this pennant over the weekend and has it proudly displayed on his wall!!
